A Moment in Time

Merlin the mouse perched inside the hole in the barn wall that was the doorway to his house. His whole body trembled and his heart was beating very quickly inside his tiny chest. Seconds ago he had sprinted to safety from the CAT.
Charlene, the cat, sat just outside the hole in the barn wall. She sat still as a stone statue and the only part of her that moved were her ears as she refocused her hearing. She knew that mouse was just inside the wall and so she sat patiently waiting for the opportunity for some fresh lunch.
Barney the farm dog had seen Charlene, the cat from some distance away and knew she was up to something. He really wanted a piece of that cat to pay her back for the scar across his most precious body part, his nose. Now he was slunk in the long grass using his nose to get focused on just where she was. He trembled in anticipation and could barley control himself from jumping up and making his attack on her.
Charlie, the young boy who lived on the farm loved his dog, Barney. One of their favorite games was played when he wanted to catch him. Charlie would call and Barney would answer back and then the chase was on. But today Charlie just wanted to catch him and put on his leash to get him in the truck. Charlie knew if he called him the game would start. He had seen Barney go around the corner of the barn so very quietly he rounded the corner and spotted Barney.
Now Barney was so fixed on Charlene that he did not notice Charlie. Charlene was so fixed on Merlin that she did not notice Barney or Charlie. Merlin was so fixed on calming himself that he knew of nothing else.
Charlie approached slowly and quietly and then pounced on Barney and snapped on his leash.
Barney howled in surprise and lunged for the cat!
Charlene hissed and arched her back ready to attack the dog that had surprised her.
Merlin jumped about 3ft in the air and his feet were already running as fast as they could when he got back on the ground. As he sped away he thanked whatever angel had come to save him from being the cat’s lunch.
